Talking To The Children
Keep in mind that as I talk about my life today and how far I have come that I definitely do not spoil my children and I still teach them the values of hard work and how it pays off. Even though I will never allow them to fall under the same circumstances that I did when I was young, I still try and teach them about what it is to be grateful for what you have and how fortunate we are because not everyone ends up with a happy ending.
Unfortunately, my family never owned a camera of any sort when I was growing up so I don’t have any pictures of my old home or where I grew up to show my kids but they are getting to the age where I can start talking to them about those who are less fortunate and where I came from.
My wife and I have had a few discussions about exactly how to talk to our kids about these kinds of topics and when to do it. There are many different opinions on this topic and we did a lot of research online to get a general feel for it. Articles like The Washington Post here might have completely different information than the next so we decided to do it on our own terms when we felt like they were ready.
There really is no definite answer but I feel like it really is an important discussion to have.
